“I didn't know I was allowed to be tired when my parents had sacrificed so much for me.”
good on you. ♡
My parents gave up everything for us. I know the whole story — the jobs they left, the family they said goodbye to, the years of working doubles so we could have what they didn't. I grew up understanding that my comfort was bought with their exhaustion.
So how do you tell people like that you're struggling? How do you say “I'm overwhelmed” to someone who worked fourteen-hour days so you could study? For years I thought gratitude and honesty couldn't coexist. That admitting I was tired meant I was ungrateful.
What shifted was a conversation with my mom that I didn't plan. I just broke one night, and instead of the lecture I expected, she sat down next to me and said, “We didn't do all that so you could suffer quietly.” I think about that sentence every day.
Sacrifice was their love language. But I'm learning that honoring it doesn't mean destroying myself to prove it was worth it. Rest isn't betrayal. Sometimes it's the whole point of what they were working toward.
